Priscilla Presley

Priscilla Presley Is More Than Just Elvis’ Wife

Priscilla Beaulieu Presley was born Priscilla Ann Wagner to James Wagner and Anna Iversen in Brooklyn, New York, on May 24, 1945. When Priscilla’s father, a pilot, died after a plane crash, Anna Wagner re-married and Priscilla took on the last name of her stepfather, Paul Beaulieu.

Meeting Elvis
Beaulieu was an officer in the U.S. Air Force who moved his family to West Germany when he was stationed there. In 1958, Elvis Presley began his two-year service in the U.S. Army. It was in Wiesbaden in 1959 when a 14-year-old Priscilla met the 24-year-old Elvis. By this time, Priscilla had grown into a stunning beauty.

Elvis was so taken with Priscilla that he persuaded the Beaulieus to allow their daughter to live with Elvis’ parents in the U.S. Priscilla, who was 17 at the time, was flown to Memphis with her stepfather to meet with the Presley’s. The meeting resulted to a special living and schooling arrangement for the young girl.

Graceland
Priscilla moved to Elvis’ estate Graceland with Elvis. Much of what is known about her time with Elvis beginning in 1963 comes from her own account and from friends and acquaintances. In spite of their living arrangement, Elvis waited until December 1966 before proposing to Priscilla. They were married on May 1, 1967 in Las Vegas with only their family and a few friends in attendance. Nine months later, Priscilla gave birth to Lisa Marie, their only child.

Elvis’ Wife
Her life as the wife of the famous Elvis Presley wasn’t exactly a fairy tale for Priscilla. She reportedly said that Elvis was a night owl who had to rent out restaurants just to dine out and make special arrangements with shop owners to keep shops open after store hours. She also reported that Elvis always used sleeping pills, even when they first lived together and that his use of prescription drugs increased over the years.

Life Without Elvis
Priscilla’s marriage to Elvis Presley lasted only 6 years. They separated in 1972 and divorced in 1973. Priscilla, who was only in her late 20s at the time, began to work as a model and actress, starring in feature films and TV guest appearances.

When Elvis’ father Vernon died in 1979, Priscilla took over the struggling estate and turned Graceland into a museum and a source of income. She became the president and chairman of Elvis Presley Enterprises. Although never remarried, she has been involved romantically with several prominent men.

Today, Priscilla is a successful businesswoman with her own line of products including perfumes and bed linens. She is still known as Elvis’ wife but she has definitely gone on to build her own life since their separation and his later death.

Life of Elvis Presley in a Glance

Nothing could be more interesting than the life of the King of Roll & Roll. He rose from a simple boy from Mississippi, became a singer and an actor, established a family, and died tragically because of a drug overdose.

Early Life

Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Vernon Presley and Gladys Love Smith. He was of Scottish, French, Jewish, and German descent. He had an identical twin named Jesse Garon who was stillborn.

His first public performance was when he was ten, in a singing competition of a dairy show. The young Elvis, so short, reached for the microphone using a chair and sang Old Shep by Red Foley. He was the second runner-up.

Celebrity Career

It was in 1954 that he started singing for the well-known Sun Records in Memphis. The following year, he found himself at RCA Victor, when his contract was sold. In 1956, he was already a very big star. Because of his distinct voice and style that perfectly combined different kinds of musical influences that transcended racial barriers, he introduced a new type of American pop culture and music.

Along with his music, he also started acting, appearing in 33 box-office films. He also made history with his television specials and appearances. He held great acclaim for his record-breaking concerts in Las Vegas and other tours.

His records have sold billions all over the world and garnered him gold multi-platinum recognitions that 149 singles and albums. He was nominated in the Grammy’s 14 times and was named TOYM of the Nation in 1970.

Military Service

Elvis became part of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Armor when he was drafted into the military on December 20, 1957. He was assigned to Friedberg, Germany. He requested for no special treatment and was respected for not participating in Special Services, where he could avoid specific duties. It was in Germany, however, that he was introduced to amphetamines by friends. Because almost all were into it, he himself began taking them.

He went back in March 2, 1960, to the United States and was given a sergeant ranking. He then continued his recording sessions after almost three years of hiatus.

Death of Presley

During the 1970s, Presley began to decline. He was often criticized for veering away from rock and pop music. Added to that were the marital problems with his wife, Priscilla, and his womanizing ways. He also started to gain weight and drugs slowly started taking control of his health. His last performance should have been in Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. A day before, however, he was found dead in the bathroom by his fiance, Ginger Alden.

The Marriage of Elvis Presley

While Elvis was in the service in Germany, he met Priscilla. She was only 14 years old then. It was love at first sight. But it was in December 1966 when Elvis formally proposed to Priscilla. Of course, for legal purposes, they got married when she turned 18.

Elvis bought a 16-acre ranch in Tennessee called Graceland. He had been interested in riding horses after he bought a horse for Priscilla. This hobby was Elvis’s therapy whenever he was unhappy or frustrated about the state of his career.

May 1, 1967 was their wedding day. The venue was Aladdin Hotel, located in Las Vegas. It was a secret wedding. It only cost Elvis $15 to get the marriage license. Elvis was clad in all black while Priscilla donned white chiffon with a satin train measuring six feet. Her ring included a three carat diamond plus twenty small ones.

The reception had a five-tiered cake and served breakfast for a hundred guests and a string trio. The newlyweds indulged their fans by granting a press conference. Afterwards, they left for Palm Springs where they spent four days in Honeymoon bliss.

After they returned to Memphis, Elvis and Priscilla wore their wedding clothes again for a second wedding that was held in the trophy room of Graceland in order to grant the wishes of family and friends who were not present for their Las Vegas wedding.

Their daughter Lisa Marie was born in February 1, 1968. Outside, the King seemed to have it all. A booming singing career and a couple of movies, a beautiful wife, a charming daughter, a grand estate. He couldn’t ask for anything more. However, what the public and his adoring fans didn’t know was that there were problems in the marriage.

Priscilla was unhappy for some time. She didn’t like the Memphis Mafia and the fact that Elvis constantly traveled. She also believed that her husband spoiled their daughter too much by letting her stay up really late, eat whatever she wanted and getting everything she desired. She asked for a divorce. They formally divorced in 1973.

Their divorce was granted and they agreed to be close friends. Priscilla had custody of Lisa Marie. Elvis didn’t have formal schedule of visitation rights. The court allowed him to spend time with his daughter as much as he wanted. He did this regularly.

It has been said that the divorce led to Elvis’s untimely death. His finances were depleted and he wasn’t taking care of himself as well.
